Canaries Post Sound realises the importance of seamless interaction between small post rooms and big mix rooms. It would be a waste of time, energy and money if processing done in the small room was all lost in translation when heard in the big mix room. Thus, the entire design studio is created symbiotically.

Rooms

A lot of research and extensive study about how sound changes in a smaller acoustic environment, has gone into creating the right mix of room at Canaries Post Sound. From rooms that translate perfectly to Dolby premium rooms, to small (multiplex type) rooms and to really large theatre rooms, each are used in accordance with a project.

  • The main mix room is used for dialogue edits, ambience edits, sound edits and everything else that goes into sound design work. It has a Pro Tools DAW, 5.1 monitoring and a Dell projection system for picture playback.
  • A second smaller room also has a Pro Tools (but with a smaller track count) and stereo monitoring. DAWs run on Apple G5s. Some smaller Pro Tools systems (like the MBox pro) are scattered around where digitizing, or play-outs and other routine work is carried out with the help of near field monitors. A speaker system with bass management is also installed in the small room.

Equipments

Every piece of equipment used at Canaries Post Sound is handpicked by the talented and discerning founders of Canaries Post Sound.

  • THX certified Blue Sky speakers made by designers from Skywalker sound – brought after an audition in LA, are the first of their kind in India
  • A bass management system controls that
  • Over ruling the use of traditional mixing boards, or ICON controllers, the Audient ASP 510 surround encoder decoder is sonically true

All in all, audio coming out of Pro Tools, going through the surround encoder decoder, into the bass management system, and finally heard via the Blue Sky speakers creates a magical mixing theatre environment that enables an easy free-flow of sound.

Complementary design

  • Friends like Roger D’Arcy and Didier Weiss helped create a well-designed acoustic environment
  • Ajayan P. B. undertook the main construction of the studio
  • Ashish Sompura worked on the studio design and tastefully done interiors

Minimal noise. Maximum care.

  • To keep the noise floor inside the control room to absolute minimum, a separate machine room is cleverly created under the stairway to house noisy computer towers, HDDs and I/Os
  • All data cables run from under the floor
  • DVI extensions are utilized as Apple Cinema Display screens and Apple computer monitor screens are used extensively
  • Video projectors and computer monitors have been carefully selected so that the luminance levels are matched and do not cause any strain on the eyes of the engineers, who typically have to work long hours
  • All studios and DAWs are interconnected and networked
  • DV PAL picture is the norm for playback of picture and it has replaced Betacam tapes
  • Most film work is done in 5.1 but the studio is wired and ready to handle a Dolby EX or Imax 6.1 mix too
  • Big windows bring in natural sunlight

Apart from sound design work, the studio is used to codify all sound effects and foleys that Resul has recorded over the years. A lot of this is on DATs as digital files. Once it is digitized, labeled, catalogued and stored on a central server, it will be available for sound design work and will be of immense help.

DVD authoring of movies and television programmes is another segment of work that is anticipated here. Currently, the same film mix is put on the DVD, whereas what is needed is re-mixing. Canaries Post Sound predicts a market for 5.1 DVD mixes for albums and television programs in India soon, and they will then be mix-ready.
